It's no coincidence that this is the only movie they have ever reviewed. Pretty shady. I knew it would be bad from the first scenes.

They, and so many to follow, were unintentionally funny. The kind of desperate, please take me seriously type of funny you'd expect from a student film.

The acting is terrible, it felt stiff and forced. I didn't waste too much time and started fast forwarding after only about 15 minutes.

So if there was some sort of cohesive story to be found it certainly did nothing to make me want to find out what it was.

A very interesting film from a director who knows his great directors and isn't afraid to wear them on his sleeve. It's rare today to discover in this genre a director who dares to go his own way and even turn the genre on its head with a style and assuredness that leaves so many others in the dust.

Bartlett's online interview at the French film festival confirmed my own suspicions that House of Last Things is not a horror film at all, nor was it ever meant to be, but more a twisted American fairy tale, a metamorphosis of events and characters as exemplified in the arcs of its two very attractive leads, Jason and Kelly, who by the end of the film have adopted new personalities altogether.

Watching this change come over these young actors is half the fun. If you're interested in something off the beaten horror path, do check this one out.

Thankfully, the lack of blood in this film is a fine thing, as that would have put it over the top. However, there is the unsettling river-flow of emotion, misplaced rage, and unqualified confusion to take its place.

Characters merge; symphonies of insanity, spawned by the abduction of a child outside a store begin to shroud the story.

One is perplexed as to where to turn, except away from the screen. That is not an option, as this film is strikingly photographed and the script, muddled at times, commands focus.

Blake Berris confirms himself as formidable. Hate him early on, as he wallows in dreadful form as a low life, or cradle his later persona as an idyllic man.

What inspired this transformation? A lost boy? The absence of God? Grime, and the grizzly inescapability of simple cruelty?

Berris does what not many can do; he makes you believe him, and you squirm at his slither of familial insanity. Thus, his character Jesse becomes Job: begrudgingly accepting the reality of his phantasmal fate to forge on, as does, less willingly, his pseudo-love, Kelly, played with lilting honesty by Lindsay Haun.

Haun conveys disillusionment with the business edge of a knife into her character, a woman wronged by self-contempt, and the men who have wooed her, wronged her and tossed her into a trash bin of immobility.

Jesse was not the first—yet now she has procured a house with a malevolent core as its foundation with just that man who she has a smidgeon of hope for, Jesse.

Her character incarnates pain, lust, normalcy, and devastating timidity. One can only wonder what her wanderlust could have brought her had she given other avenues a chance.

Mitte is splendid in his secondary role of the brother to the befuddled Kelly. He brings gentle authenticity to a boy who does not deserve his ordeal.

Absent is his needy, grit-filled Breaking Bad boy. In House of Last Things he's edgy, with the delicacy befitting any fundamental character wedged in a mind-bend of suspended certainty.

Viewing House of Last Things is rather like eating the worm in the last shot of expensive tequila; it swirls in your system until you experience its bite.

One either endures the pleasurable toxin of its evocative gnaw, or awakens with a hangover of unnerved emptiness.

Either way, one is bitten. It was a sincere, surreal and quite uncommon experience as if "The Shining" met "Twin Peaks".

A deep voyage into the ways how a house or other locations can change the psyche of a human being. Open your eyes and ears and let the music of both the director with his flow of stunning images and the composers take you through this voyage.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Finally caught it at the Houston World Fest. I admit it was different from what I'd expected. What I got was gentler, more thoughtful, and mature storytelling.

This film was beautifully laid out, handsomely crafted, and lyrically held together. The way that music and color was used to weave the past and present together really brought the whole film together for me.

And, the creepy, almost fairytale use of the apple tree and golf balls was awesome! I'm so glad that I had a chance to see it in the theater.

It is to the festivals credit that they included a few richly imaginative films as this one instead of just so many relentlessly bloody movies without end.

The imagination on display in this low budget movie was sometimes the feeling of Spanish surrealism and then with a love for David Lynch and Hitchcock, especially the scene with the balloons attacking in the bedroom like in The Birds.

As I say, I watched in English, so some of the speeches were not effective for me, but instead I could easily enjoy the visual language of the director as a feast for my eyes.

The actors played the parts as if they were in a kind of trance and the music supported them very effectively. The actor who played Jesse was very special and it was wonderful to see RJ Mitte in his first movie since Breaking Bad, my favorite show ever.

Sarah does not want to travel but Alan introduces the hot Kelly Lindsey Haun to her telling that she will be the caretaker of the house.

When they leave the house, the small-time criminal Jesse Blake Berris , who is Kelly's boyfriend, unexpectedly arrives at the house.

Kelly had a love affair with Alan and feels comfortable in the house. Meanwhile Jesse steals Alan's convertible to sell to a dealer but he sees the boy Adam Micah Nelson alone in the supermarket and decides to bring him home to ransom him despite the protest of Kelly that seeks out his parents.

Adam feels good in the house and soon they learn that the house is haunted but they surprisingly stay there.

Meanwhile in Italy, secrets are disclosed about the past of Alan, Sarah and Adam and why Sarah had a mental breakdown.

The story is intriguing and disclosed like a puzzle but there is lack of explanation for many things, such as who is the bizarre lady that visits Alan and Kelly; or the reference to the Garden of Eden.

The cast has great performances and the unknown Lindsey Haun is very sexy. The final transformation of Kelly and Jesse is certainly inspired in David Lynch.

In the end, "House of Last Things" is an original film of haunted house. My vote is six. Title Brazil : Not Available. The truth is what is fighting to get free, and the other truths that are forced up trying to get to the source are all equally vague until they are not anymore.

I have to add the balloon had to have been stuck in the tree, and Adam was climbing up to get it, not just hiding. I believe that the house was trying to get that across as well taking some of the blame, and giving some to the tree.

They do touch on the House having memories that it is trying to work through. The basics of the opening act are really just slow, and fulfilling dropping you in to the second act not liking the boyfriend, completely suspicious of the Brother, and uncertain why this girl is permitting these sorts of behaviors.

So I was surprised when during that second act I found that I was Enjoying the twists back, and forth from Italy, and the strange Wacky Wednesday kind of stuff that is messing with everyone.

There is a lot of energy tying the owners of the house to the sitters. If you like mixed up, twisted magical movies that are trying to keep you off guard all the time, and you know you be rewarded for taking the ride; then this is one I recommend you sit back, and soak in.

What makes a good genre film for me is if the director and writer, in this case one and the same, can immerse me believably into a world I haven't walked before, enough in fact for me to turn off my cell phone.

However, I don't think it's really fair or correct to compare this director with his obvious linage, Hitchcock, Lynch, DePalma, etc.

This is a director with a mind of his own, quite willing to go his own way inside a genre that has been sabotaged over the years by too many under-schooled directors flooding the screen with blood and gore indiscriminately.

This one surprised me. Much better than I expected. I know from other audience people that I am not singular with this evaluation.

As I think back on the many films showing, it is this image of this dreamy film that I am always returning to in my memory. It is a bizarre and beautiful story that captures the truthful essence of what I believe fantastic cinema should be.

The acting was very convincing and it was extra special to see the boy from the TV show Breaking Bad in his first movie.

It was probably not expensive to make than the other big Hollywood films in competition, but it has a mood of richness and was a new vision of this genre and the acting was very superior too.

I could appreciate that the director is very learned of the history of great fantastical films like from Cocteau and even Hitchcock and David Lynch.
